Surprising
his wife, Denise, and their Toy Poodle, Nelson, Ivor Kavin returned home
early from work on December 13, 2001 not feeling well and complaining of
a fever. After removing his outerwear, he informed Denise that he was
going straight to bed to “sweat it out.” At around midnight, Denise retired to bed where Ivor was soundly sleeping. At 3:20 a.m., Denise felt something wet in her ear and heard whimpering sounds – it was Nelson. Absolutely exhausted and believing that Nelson wanted to go outside, she nudged him away and told him to wake Ivor. As she took two Tylenol tablets to combat pain from an earlier bone transplant, she quickly fell back to sleep. However, a persistent Nelson would not leave her alone. Nelson jumped onto Denise’s chest and nuzzled against her face. She woke up finding herself on a vibrating bed. Her husband was in a pool of perspiration suffering from convulsions. Denise tried to wake him up but found him incoherent. She finally managed to drag him out of bed and took him to the hospital. Ivor arrived at the hospital in critical condition. With two previous leg infections, doctors determined he had Flesh Eating Disease. His doctors and Denise believed his leg would have to be amputated after it swelled and turned purple in a matter of minutes. After several tests, they concluded that they did not need to amputate Ivor’s leg as he was suffering from Sleep Apnea – a disorder that poisons the person in question due to the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in their blood. They discovered that Ivor’s blood was not receiving oxygen, which made him prone to repeating and more severe infections. Ivor recuperated after over a month. The doctors informed Denise that if Nelson were unsuccessful in waking her up, Ivor would not have made it through the night. |
