Winnipeg, Manitoba Maggie May's mother and her puppies were rescued from a puppy mill in Winnipeg, and when Suann DeCourcey saw Maggie May, she decided to adopt her. At just eight months old, Maggie May repaid the favour by rescuing Suann. One afternoon, Suann and Maggie May were home alone. Suann began to feel strangely tired and increasingly lethargic. She lay down for a nap and was woken up a couple of hours later by Maggie May sitting on her chest, licking her face and whining. Curious about the dog's unusual behaviour, she sat up and realized the carbon monoxide detector was going off. Groggy and disoriented, Suann struggled up and tried to remove the alarm's batteries as she thought the noise was upsetting Maggie May. Still not realizing the danger, Suann called her daughter, Tracy to ask how to turn the alarm off. Tracy urged her mother to call the fire department, who in turn, instructed Suann to take the dog and leave the house immediately. The fire department and the gas company arrived within minutes and confirmed that Suann's furnace was emitting lethal levels of carbon monoxide. Being deaf in one ear, Suann had not heard the alarm and would not have awoken without Maggie May's intervention. |
